The Appearance of Water and Lichen

My work is inspired by nature and the natural forms that we see all around us. The themes in my work are based on my observations, and how I interpret these. Capturing that moment in time, for example the patterns created on the surface of the water from the light, and the surface textures that we see in natural flora such as lichen.

My main area of interest is lost wax casting where you can manipulate the medium and capture the organic textures and forms.

The final collection named ‘The Appearance of Water and Lichen’ was the amalgamation of the different textures and forms that had been created resulting in quite a diverse collection. The colours used where a combination of chemical patination, 24ct gold foil, and gold enamel which have worked well to accentuate the different textures

The main piece was a necklace created from bronze and silver showing the amalgamation of the different textures, through casting and chemical patination

Rectangular Porcelain and Silver brooch

Contrasting textures come together in this piece, to build the structural form. The cup formation, and the addition of gold foil using Keum-boo depict the ‘cup-like’ structures found on Lichen.

Pixie Cup Cluster Ring

The multiple lichen pixie cups are brought together to create a cascade effect, coloration of the cups being liquid gold enamel or matt white create contrast with the black patina finish.

Porcelain and Silver Lichen Oval Brooches

The texture of the porcelain captures the patterns on lichen or the surface of the water, the lichen is cast directly, and the composition brings the contrasting effects together.

Square Lichen Brooch

This brooch captures the Lichen in its square frame, the coloration is created by using different contact times with Liver of Sulphur to create the contrast. Others were created using 24ct Gold leaf
